Case IH 2482 (514.19) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU), Vehicle Control Unit (VCU), or EBS module: Nominal Friction - Percent Torque: Received Network Data In Error / Comms Err

Controller Area Network (CAN) communication error indicating that the 'Nominal Friction - Percent Torque' data broadcasted by the engine over the J1939 data link is missing, invalid, or received in error.

   Verify Engine ECU status by checking if it is powered on and looking for other active engine fault codes that might indicate the ECU is offline.

   Perform a CAN bus integrity check by measuring resistance across the CAN High and CAN Low pins with the battery disconnected (should read approximately 60 ohms, indicating both 120-ohm terminating resistors are intact).

   Inspect the wiring harness between the Engine ECU and the Transmission/Vehicle control modules for chafing, corrosion, or loose connector pins.

   Check for known software updates or bugs causing the ECU to drop the EEC3/EEC1 CAN messages.

   Disconnect Power

   Turn off the machine and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical damage during testing.

   Inspect Connectors

   Disconnect the main harnesses at the Engine ECU and the module logging the fault (e.g., TCU/VCU). Inspect the pins for moisture, corrosion, or terminal push-out. Clean with contact cleaner if necessary.

   Repair Wiring

   If the CAN bus resistance test fails (e.g., reads 120 ohms or open circuit), locate the break in the CAN High or CAN Low wires, or locate the failed terminating resistor. Splice and seal any damaged wires using OEM-approved heat-shrink connectors.

   Replace Terminating Resistor

   If a terminating resistor is found to be open/failed, replace it.

   Clear Codes and Retest

   Reconnect the battery, turn the key to the ON position, and clear the inactive fault codes. Start the engine and monitor the CAN bus data to ensure the SPN 514 signal is actively broadcasting without FMI 19 errors.

   ECU Replacement/Reflash

   If the wiring is 100% intact and the Engine ECU is still failing to broadcast the Nominal Friction Percent Torque data, the ECU must be reflashed with the latest OEM software or replaced.
