Case IH 2484 (519578.02) - DEC – DEC: CAN 1 - EPL recovery status plausibility

Issue description

A communication or plausibility error over the CAN 1 network regarding the recovery status of the EPL (Electronic Park Lock) actuator. The controller cannot verify the correct position, initialization, or calibration status of the park lock. This is almost always triggered when the tractor's battery goes dead, drops voltage significantly during cranking, or is disconnected, causing the EPL module to lose its memory and initialization status.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Magnum Series (180, 190, 210, 225)
  • Case IH Puma Series (165, 185, 195)
  • Case IH Optum Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series (100-140)

Check the cause

  1. Perform a battery voltage and load test, as the EPL system is highly sensitive to low amperage/voltage and will trigger faults if voltage drops during startup

  2. Ensure all battery cables and terminals are clean, tight, and free of corrosion

  3. Check for accompanying EPL codes on the corner post display (e.g., 12213 - Actuator not initialised, or 12212 - Accelerometer not calibrated)

  4. Verify that the physical EPL Bowden cable is properly adjusted and not mechanically binding

Repair steps

  1. Perform In-Cab EPL Reinitialization

Sit in the operator's seat and hold both brake pedals down firmly. Release the manual hand brake (if equipped/engaged). Turn the ignition key to the RUN position (do not start the engine yet). Place the shift lever into the Neutral position. Press and hold the Neutral button on the shifter handle. The electronic brake should release, and the fault code should clear.

  2. Perform Advanced Calibration

If the in-cab reinitialization does not work, the EPL has lost its calibration parameters. Access the tractor's HH-Menu (diagnostic menu) via the corner post display or connect the Case IH EST (Electronic Service Tool) laptop. Navigate to the EPL controller configurations and perform the automated EPL calibration procedure to relearn the actuator limits and accelerometer orientation.

  3. Replace Components

If calibration fails repeatedly, or if the actuator has suffered an internal hardware/motor failure (sometimes accompanied by an 'actuation timeout' code), the EPL actuator unit or the Bowden cable will need to be replaced, followed by a fresh EST calibration.
