Case IH 2486 – EPL (Electronic Park Lock) Controller / Module: EPL not configurated and shuttle lever with park position

The Electronic Park Lock (EPL) system has lost its initialization memory or cannot verify the park position of the shuttle lever.

   Verify the battery is fully charged and holding 12+ volts (low battery voltage or having to jump-start a tractor that has been sitting is the #1 cause of the EPL losing its memory).

   Check the wiring harness at the EPL module. Specifically, test pins A4 and C7 on the EPL module for a short to ground, a cut/open circuit, or a short to supply voltage.

   Verify that the forward/reverse/park shuttle lever is not physically damaged and that the neutral button functions.

   Inspect the park brake mechanism located just in front of the LH (left-hand) rear axle on the side of the transmission. Ensure the EPL cable and levers are not seized by mud or debris.

   Reinitialize the EPL System

   Ensure the tractor is parked safely. With the key OFF, place the shuttle lever into the Park position.

   Reinitialize the EPL System

   Push down firmly on BOTH brake pedals and hold them.

   Reinitialize the EPL System

   Turn the ignition key to the ON position (do not start the engine). Wait for the corner-post instrumentation to complete its wake-up self-test.

   Reinitialize the EPL System

   Move the shuttle lever out of Park and into the middle/neutral position.

   Reinitialize the EPL System

   Push the Neutral button on the shuttle lever. Listen closely behind the cab; you should hear the EPL actuator motor whine for a couple of seconds as it moves the cable.

   Reinitialize the EPL System

   Once the actuator motor stops whining, push the shuttle lever back into the Park position.

   Reinitialize the EPL System

   You should hear the EPL motor whine for another couple of seconds and then stop. The system is now reinitialized. Cycle the key and check if the fault code clears.

   Adjust the Park Brake Cable (If Initialization Fails)

   Locate the park brake mechanism in front of the LH axle on the side of the transmission (you may need to work around the fuel tank).

   Adjust the Park Brake Cable

   Locate the two levers: the outside lever is for the manual cab brake, and the inside lever is controlled by the EPL unit.

    Adjust the Park Brake Cable

    Loosen the locknut on the EPL cable.

    Adjust the Park Brake Cable

    Back the nut away until about 3 threads are showing between it and the arm it normally jams against to manually adjust the stiffness/slack.

    Retry the initialization procedure.

    Component Replacement

    If pins A4 or C7 fail continuity tests, repair the wiring harness.

    If the shuttle lever fails to send the park signal, replace the shuttle lever assembly.

    If the EPL actuator does not actuate during the initialization sequence despite having good power and ground, replace the EPL actuator motor.
