Case IH 2497 (517961.07) - DEC – DEC: Clutch ODD Solenoid - clutch slipping

Issue description

The transmission controller has detected that the transmission clutches are slipping. Specifically, it points to a failure involving the Clutch ODD Solenoid. The solenoid responsible for engaging the odd-numbered gears is either electrically failing, suffering from a wiring fault, or experiencing low hydraulic pressure, causing the clutch packs to slip under load.

Applies to these machines

  • MAXXUM T4E
  • Case IH Magnum Series (e.g., Magnum 235 - 340 Series 4)

Check the cause

  1. Check transmission fluid level to ensure it is not low, and check for a worn hydraulic pump, which can cause a lack of pressure and clutch slippage

  2. Inspect the wiring harness between the DEC module and the Clutch ODD Solenoid for an open circuit or a short to ground

  3. Connect a diagnostic tool (Case IH EST or Jaltest) to verify active or stored faults, as these codes cannot be cleared via the instrument cluster

  4. Verify if the transmission clutches have lost calibration

Repair steps

  1. Connect Diagnostic Equipment

Hook up the Case IH EST laptop to the tractor's diagnostic port to read live data and confirm if the fault is currently active or stored.

  2. Inspect and Repair Wiring

Trace the wiring from the transmission controller (DEC) to the Clutch ODD Solenoid. Look for chafed wires or disconnected plugs. Repair any shorts to ground or open circuits.

  3. Test/Replace the Solenoid

If the wiring is intact, test the Clutch ODD Solenoid's resistance. If it is out of specification (internally shorted or open), remove and replace the solenoid.

  4. Check Hydraulic Pressure

If the electrical circuit is functioning properly, perform a high-pressure test on the transmission pump to ensure adequate fluid pressure is reaching the odd clutch pack.

  5. Recalibrate Clutches

After replacing the solenoid or repairing the wiring, use the diagnostic software to perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure.

Parts you might need
