Case IH 2498 (517959.07) – Transmission Control Unit (TCU / Trans): Clutch EVEN Solenoid - clutch slipping

The controller has detected that the "Even" gear clutch pack is slipping under load, or there is an electrical failure (open circuit or short to ground) in the Clutch EVEN Solenoid circuit. When the solenoid fails to actuate properly, or if there is a loss of hydraulic pressure, the clutch plates do not fully compress, causing them to slip and potentially burn out.

   Inspect the transmission solenoid harness for open circuits, shorts to ground, or moisture/dirt buildup in the connectors

   Verify transmission oil levels and perform a hydraulic pressure test on the transmission valve manifold test ports (e.g., lube pressure DR port) to check for 277-295 PSI

   Test the Clutch EVEN solenoid directly for proper resistance and operation

   Run a transmission calibration cycle via the H-Menu to check for sensor and calibration drift

   Check the transmission oil filter for rapid plugging, which indicates internal clutch pack material is disintegrating

   Resolve Electrical Faults

   If the diagnostic tests reveal a dead solenoid or wiring short, replace the affected transmission solenoid valve on the exterior valve block and repair the harness. Clear the codes and recalibrate the transmission.

   Recalibrate

   If pressure is good and solenoids test fine, perform a full clutch calibration procedure as outlined in the Case IH service manual.

   Internal Transmission Repair

   If hydraulic pressure is low or the clutch continues to slip after solenoid replacement and calibration, internal wear (such as a blown piston seal or burned clutch plates) is the culprit.

   Tractor Split

   Safely support the tractor, remove the cab (if required by the specific model's service manual), and split the tractor to access the transmission.

   Clutch Pack Rebuild

   Remove the transmission housing. Inspect the clutch disc, pressure plate, and release bearing for glazing, scoring, or heat damage. Replace the worn clutch pack, seals, and any seized bearings.

   Reassembly

   Reassemble the transmission, refill with OEM-spec hydraulic/transmission fluid, install new filters, and perform a mandatory transmission calibration before returning the tractor to the field.
