Case IH 25 – Electronic Hitch Control Module: Position Lever Potentiometer Control Voltage Low (Short Or Open Circuit)

Issue description

This code indicates that the signal voltage coming from the hitch position lever potentiometer has dropped below the acceptable minimum threshold. The system interprets this low voltage as either a short to ground or a complete open circuit in the potentiometer itself or its wiring harness.

Applies to these machines

  • MXM
  • MXM 120
  • MXM 130
  • MXM 140
  • MXM 155
  • MXM 175
  • MXM 190
  • Magnum 7110
  • Magnum 7120
  • Magnum 7130
  • Magnum 7140
  • Magnum 7150
  • Magnum 7210
  • Magnum 7220
  • MX210
  • MX230
  • MX255
  • MX285

Check the cause

  1. Harness Inspection: Inspect the 3-pin connector at the position lever potentiometer. Look for backed-out pins, corrosion, or moisture.

  2. Circuit Testing: Trace the wiring harness back to the hitch controller. Check for continuity to ensure there is no open circuit. Test the signal wire for a short to ground.

  3. Voltage Sweep Test: The potentiometer operates on a 0–5V variable resistance circuit. Using a multimeter, verify that the controller is supplying the 5V reference and a good ground. Back-probe the signal wire while moving the position lever; the voltage should sweep smoothly. If the voltage drops out or stays at 0V, the potentiometer has failed internally.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes during component replacement.

  2. Access the Potentiometer

Locate the hitch position potentiometer, which is a bolt-on sensor connected to the hitch control lever assembly.

  3. Remove the Faulty Sensor

Unplug the 3-pin connector and unbolt the potentiometer from its mounting bracket.

  4. Install the New Sensor

Bolt the replacement potentiometer into place and reconnect the 3-pin harness.

  5. Recapture Hitch Position (Calibration)

After replacing a potentiometer or disconnecting it with the key switch "ON", the system must be recalibrated.

  6. Cycle the Lever

Start the tractor. The hitch "Enable" light will likely be flashing. You must cycle the hitch position lever fully to recapture the hitch position. The system requires the rock shaft potentiometer and the new position lever potentiometer to read within 4.2% (± 0.077 volts) of each other to successfully sync.

  7. Clear Codes

Verify that the hitch raises and lowers correctly using the lever, and clear the stored fault code 25 from the CFPS/GCM1 module.
