Case IH 2502 – Transmission Controller: Transmission oil pressure sensor - short circuit to +5V
Issue description
The transmission controller is receiving a maximum voltage signal (5 volts) from the transmission oil pressure sensor. This typically occurs when the sensor's signal wire is shorted directly to the 5-volt reference wire, the sensor has lost its ground connection, or the sensor has suffered an internal electrical failure.

Check the cause
Inspect the transmission oil pressure sensor wiring harness for chafing, melting, or pinched wires that could cause a short circuit.
Disconnect the sensor and inspect the electrical connector for moisture, dirt, corrosion, or bent pins.
With the key ON and the sensor disconnected, use a multimeter to test the connector pins. Verify the presence of a 5V reference voltage and a solid ground.
Test the signal wire. If the signal wire reads 5V while disconnected from the sensor, the wiring harness is shorted to the 5V reference line.
If the harness tests good (proper 5V reference, good ground, and no shorts in the signal wire back to the transmission controller), the sensor itself has an internal short and must be replaced.
Repair steps
Park and relieve pressure
Park the machine on a level surface, turn off the engine, and relieve any residual system pressure.
Locate the sensor
Locate the transmission oil pressure sensor. It is typically threaded into the transmission case or hydraulic valve body manifold (on some Maxxum models, this requires removing a small access panel; on Magnums, it may be on the left side valve body between the fuel tank and transmission).
Clean the area
Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt and debris from contaminating the transmission fluid when the port is opened.
Disconnect harness
Disconnect the electrical wiring harness from the sensor.
Remove faulty sensor
Using the appropriate wrench, unscrew the faulty sensor. Have a shop rag ready to catch any residual transmission oil that drips out.
Prepare new sensor
Prepare the new sensor. If it does not have pre-applied thread locker, apply a light coat of hydraulic-safe thread sealant to the threads.
Install new sensor
Thread the new sensor into the port by hand to avoid cross-threading, then tighten securely with a wrench.
Reconnect harness
Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the connector clicks and locks into place.
Test and clear code
Start the tractor, check the sensor for leaks, observe the cab display to ensure the pressure reading is accurate, and clear the 2502 fault code from the transmission controller.
