2503

Case IH 2503 – UCM (User Control Module) or Transmission Controller: Clutch A solenoid – in use and open circuit or short circuit to ground

Issue description

The control module has detected an electrical fault—specifically an open circuit (broken wire/disconnected plug) or a short to ground—on the circuit controlling the Transmission Clutch A solenoid while it is actively being commanded.

Applies to these machines

  • Optum
  • Case IH Puma Series
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Magnum Series

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active error codes and resolve them first

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Clutch A solenoid (located on the transmission external controls valve block) for damaged wires, rubbed-through insulation, or corrosion

  3. Perform a transmission pressure test to rule out hydraulic circuit failures by manually energizing the Clutch A solenoid (expected pressure around 17±1 bar)

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Fault

Disconnect the Clutch A solenoid connector. Use a multimeter to check the resistance of the solenoid coil and check the harness for continuity to the UCM and for shorts to the chassis ground.

  2. Repair or Replace

If the harness is damaged, repair the broken wire or shorted section. If the solenoid coil is open or shorted internally, remove the retaining bolt/bracket on the transmission valve block and replace the Clutch A solenoid valve.

  3. Clear the Code

Once the physical repair is made, use the tractor's diagnostic interface (or EST tool) to clear the stored fault codes.

  4. Test and Calibrate

Test the system for normal operation. Perform a transmission clutch calibration to ensure the UCM learns the fill times for the new solenoid.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Transmission Clutch A Solenoid Valve (PWM Solenoid)

Ensure the O-rings are lubricated with clean transmission fluid before installing the new solenoid cartridge to prevent tearing.
