2505 (123.17)

Case IH 2505 (123.17) – Transmission Control Module (TCU): Clutch A pressure not plausible (mismatch between clutch A pressure and solenoid current)

Issue description

The transmission controller is sending a specific electrical current to the Clutch A proportional solenoid to achieve a target hydraulic pressure, but the system detects that the resulting clutch pressure does not match the expected value for that commanded current. This typically points to a failing solenoid coil, a sticking mechanical valve, or a wiring issue.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Puma Series (e.g., 165, 180, 195, 210, 225)
  • Magnum Series (e.g., MX210, MX230, MX255, MX285)
  • Maxxum Series (e.g., MXM 120, 130, 140, 155, 175, 190)

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active error codes (such as open circuit or short-to-ground codes for the Clutch A solenoid) and troubleshoot those electrical faults first

  2. Inspect the Clutch A solenoid connector (X-527) and the dump solenoid connector (X-545) to ensure they are securely connected, undamaged, and pins are in the correct position

  3. Check battery voltage to ensure it is sufficient, as low voltage can cause erratic solenoid operation

  4. Disconnect the Clutch A solenoid and measure the resistance between terminal 1 and terminal 2 (should be 8 to 11 Ohms). If outside this range, the solenoid is internally faulty

  5. Test the wiring harness between the transmission controller and the solenoid for a short to ground or a short to positive voltage

Repair steps

  1. Safely park the machine, relieve all hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the battery.

  2. Locate the transmission control valve block and identify the Clutch A solenoid valve.

Usually on the side of the transmission housing.

  3. Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the Clutch A solenoid.

  4. Unbolt and remove the faulty solenoid valve from the manifold.

  5. Clean the mounting surface on the valve block.

Ensure no dirt or debris enters the open hydraulic ports.

  6. Install the new solenoid valve.

Ensure all O-rings and seals are properly seated.

  7. Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery.

  8. Start the tractor, check for hydraulic leaks, and perform a transmission clutch calibration (Clutch A quick fill adjustment).

Use the tractor's display or an electronic service tool. This is required to teach the controller the engagement characteristics of the new valve.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Transmission Proportional Solenoid Valve / Clutch A Solenoid Valve

    48055262

Replaces older numbers 87729558R / 48055262R. Main transmission solenoid valve used on many Case IH and Ford/New Holland powershift models.

  • Dump Solenoid Cartridge for Clutch A & B

    87472229

Used on specific Puma CVT/Powershift valve blocks.

  • Solenoid Coil

    84259238

If only the electrical coil has failed and the mechanical valve is intact; fits the 349295A1 solenoid assembly used on MX/MC series.
