Case IH 2512 – Transmission Control Module (TCM): F3 solenoid - open circuit or short circuit to ground
Issue description
The control module has detected that the electrical circuit operating the F3 (Forward 3 / Synchronizer 3) solenoid is either incomplete (an open circuit) or the voltage is bleeding off to the chassis (a short to ground). Because of this, the solenoid cannot energize to direct hydraulic pressure, resulting in shifting failures or a loss of specific gears.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the transmission valve body and wiring harness leading to the F3 solenoid for rubbed-through wire insulation, pinched wires, or heat damage.
Disconnect the F3 solenoid connector and check for water ingress, dirt, or corroded/pushed-back pins.
Verify that the transmission harness ground points are clean and tight, as a poor ground is a frequent cause of solenoid circuit faults.
Perform a coil resistance test using a multimeter across the two pins of the F3 solenoid. Infinite resistance indicates an internal open; near-zero ohms indicates an internal short.
Check the continuity of the two wires from the solenoid connector back to the Transmission Control Module to rule out a break in the chassis harness.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and allow the transmission to cool. Ensure all hydraulic pressure is relieved before servicing transmission components.
Access the Solenoid
Locate the F3 solenoid on the transmission control valve block.
Wiring Repair
If the diagnostic tests revealed a broken wire or damaged connector, splice in a new connector pigtail using weather-sealed heat-shrink butt connectors.
Solenoid Replacement
Thoroughly clean the area around the F3 solenoid. Disconnect the electrical connector, remove the retaining bolt/bracket, and carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve body. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission hydraulic fluid, insert the new solenoid, install the retaining bracket, and torque the bolt to OEM specifications.
Reassembly & Calibration
Reconnect the wiring harness. Turn the key on, clear the stored 2512 fault code, and perform a transmission/clutch calibration procedure to ensure the TCM learns the engagement profile of the new solenoid.
