2515

Case IH 2515 – Transmission Control Module (TECU) / Universal Control Module (UCM) / Universal Controller (HK): F1/F3 synchronizer - neutral did not engage.

Issue description

The transmission controller commanded the F1/F3 synchronizer to return to the neutral position, but the synchronizer position sensor (potentiometer) did not detect the mechanism reaching the expected neutral range within the allowed timeframe.

Applies to these machines

  • Optum
  • Case IH Puma CVX / CVT Series: 130, 145, 150, 160, 165, 170, 185, 200, 215, 220, 230, 240
  • Case IH Magnum CVT Series: 180, 200, 220, 235, 240, 260, 290, 315, 340, 370
  • Case IH MX / TG Series

Check the cause

  1. Check F1/F3 synchronizer position sensor readings via the H Menu or Electronic Service Tool (EST) on Channel 60 / X-955 13. Normal neutral range is 2050 - 2800.

  2. Inspect wiring harness and connectors for the F1/F3 Synchro Sensor (X-532), F1 Solenoid Valve (X537), and F3 Solenoid Valve (X538) for open or short circuits to ground.

  3. Perform a hydraulic pressure test at the transmission pressure ports to ensure shift cylinders are receiving adequate pressure to move the synchronizer fork.

Repair steps

  1. Clear Codes and Calibrate

Turn the ignition key ON, navigate to the H8 menu to clear all stored fault codes and calibration values, and attempt a full CVT transmission calibration.

  2. Replace the Position Sensor

If the calibration fails and the fault is still present, the F1/F3 synchronizer position sensor is likely faulty. Remove and replace the position sensor, then recalibrate.

  3. Software Update

If the fault is still present after replacing the sensor, connect the EST and download the correct/latest level of transmission software.

  4. Inspect Internal Mechanical Components

If the fault recurs, the issue is mechanical. The transmission gear cover must be removed to access the CVT internal components. Inspect the F1/F3 shift cylinders, shifter fork, and the F1/F3 synchronizer assembly for binding, wear, or damage. Replace worn components.

  5. Replace the UCM

If all wiring, sensors, and mechanical components are verified to be in working order, the service manual dictates removing and replacing the Universal Control Module (UCM).
