Case IH 2517 – UCM (Universal Control Module): F2/R1 synchronizer potentiometer - signal too high

Issue description

The control module is receiving a voltage signal from the F2/R1 (Forward 2 / Reverse 1) synchronizer potentiometer that exceeds the maximum calibrated limit. This typically points to an electrical issue such as an open circuit, a short to a power source, an internal failure of the potentiometer, a jammed synchronizer, or an external power supply interfering with the electrical system.

Applies to these machines

  • Optum
  • Case IH Puma Series 165, 180, 195, 210, 225 CVX
  • Case IH Maxxum Series
  • Case IH Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Verify that the tractor battery has not been connected to an external power supply (like a jump starter or external charger)

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and the electrical connector at the F2/R1 synchronizer potentiometer for damaged wires, corrosion, or loose pins

  3. Back-probe the synchronizer potentiometer electrical connector (e.g., X-533 pin 4 on Maxxum models) using a DATARScope or multimeter to monitor the signal voltage

  4. Ensure there is no mechanical problem on the driveline or a jammed synchronizer preventing the potentiometer from reading the correct physical position

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the machine and disconnect any external power supplies.

  2. Repair Wiring

If the diagnostic checks reveal a short or open circuit in the wiring harness, repair or replace the affected wiring/connector.

  3. Replace Sensor

If the wiring is intact but the voltage signal remains too high, remove and replace the faulty F2/R1 synchronizer potentiometer.

  4. Clear Codes

Once the physical repair is complete, use the diagnostic interface to clear the error code from the UCM.

  5. Calibrate Transmission

Perform a transmission calibration procedure. The UCM must learn the new voltage limits of the replacement synchronizer potentiometer for the F2/R1 positions. Note: If transmission oil is too cold or too hot, a warning may appear during calibration.
