2518 (518576.04) - DEC

Case IH 2518 (518576.04) - DEC – Transmission Control Module: F2/R1 Synchronizer Potentiometer – Signal Too Low

Issue description

The controller has detected that the voltage signal from the F2/R1 synchronizer position sensor has dropped below the acceptable threshold. This is typically caused by the signal wire being short-circuited to ground, an open circuit in the signal wire, or an open circuit in the 5V reference supply wire feeding the sensor. Because of this fault, the transmission controller cannot determine the physical position of the F2/R1 synchronizer gear.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Maxxum series
  • Case IH Magnum series
  • Case IH Farmall
  • Case IH Quantum

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Inspect the electrical connector at the F2/R1 synchronizer potentiometer on the transmission housing. Look for dirt, moisture ingress, or bent/corroded pins.

  2. Supply Voltage Check: Disconnect the sensor and turn the key to the ON position. Measure the voltage at the supply pin on the harness side. It should read a steady 5V reference from the UCM. If it reads 0V, you have an open circuit in the supply wire.

  3. Signal Wire Check: Test the signal wire for continuity between the sensor connector and the UCM connector. Ensure there is no continuity to ground (which would indicate a short to ground).

  4. Ground Check: Verify that the sensor ground circuit has low resistance.

  5. If the wiring harness, connectors, and voltages all test within specification, the potentiometer itself has suffered an internal failure and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure tractor

Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the engine.

  2. Locate sensor

Locate the F2/R1 synchronizer potentiometer on the exterior of the transmission case.

  3. Clean area

Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor to prevent any dirt or debris from falling into the transmission housing during removal.

  4. Disconnect harness

Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the sensor.

  5. Remove sensor

Remove the retaining hardware (screws/bolts) holding the potentiometer in place and carefully pull the old sensor straight out.

  6. Install new sensor

Install the new OEM potentiometer. Crucial Step: Ensure the rotational drive tang on the new sensor aligns perfectly with the slot on the synchronizer shaft inside the transmission.

  7. Secure sensor

Install and tighten the retaining hardware to the specified torque.

  8. Reconnect harness

Reconnect the wiring harness connector, ensuring it clicks and locks securely.

  9. Clear fault code

Turn the ignition key ON and use the tractor's diagnostic display (or a CNH service tool) to clear the stored 2518 error code.

  10. Perform calibration

You must perform a transmission/synchronizer calibration procedure (as outlined in the operator's or service manual) so the UCM can learn the new sensor's physical end-stops.
