Case IH 2518 – UCM / CCU: F2/R1 synchronizer potentiometer - signal too low
Issue description
The voltage signal returning from the F2/R1 synchronizer position sensor (potentiometer) to the control module has dropped below the acceptable minimum threshold, indicating a potential open circuit, short to ground, or a failed sensor.
Applies to these machines
9 machines- Optum
- Case IH Puma 165
- Case IH Puma 180
- Case IH Puma 195
- Case IH Puma 210
- Case IH Puma 225
- Case IH Puma CVX
- Case IH MX Series
- Case IH TG Series
Check the cause
Inspect the electrical connector at the F2/R1 synchronizer potentiometer for corrosion, moisture, backed-out pins, or poor terminal tension.
Test the wiring harness between the potentiometer and the UCM/CCU for an open circuit or a short circuit to ground.
Measure the resistance/voltage sweep of the F2/R1 synchronizer position sensor to check for internal failure or dead spots.
If the sensor and wiring harness test perfectly, check the UCM/CCU for faults (least common failure mode).
Repair steps
Power down the tractor and disconnect the battery
Power down the tractor and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical shorts during repair.
Locate the F2/R1 synchronizer potentiometer
Locate the F2/R1 synchronizer potentiometer on the transmission housing (often denoted as sensor X533 or X534 in CNH electrical schematics).
Disconnect the wiring harness connector
Disconnect the wiring harness connector from the potentiometer.
Extract the old potentiometer
If diagnostic tests proved the sensor is faulty, remove the retaining hardware and extract the old potentiometer from the synchronizer assembly.
Install the new OEM potentiometer
Install the new OEM potentiometer and secure it with the mounting hardware.
Reconnect the wiring harness
Reconnect the wiring harness, ensuring the connector clicks securely into place.
Reconnect the battery
Reconnect the battery.
Clear the 2518 error code
Using the tractor's integrated control panel or an electronic service tool (EST), clear the 2518 error code from the UCM.
Test the system for normal operation
Test the system for normal operation by shifting through the F2 and R1 ranges to ensure the synchronizer engages properly and the code does not return.
