Case IH 2522 (517971.05) - DEC – UCM: R1 Solenoid - Open Circuit Or Short Circuit To Ground

Issue description

This code indicates a circuit fault where the transmission's R1 synchronizer solenoid is experiencing an open circuit (broken wire/disconnected) or a short circuit to ground.

Applies to these machines

  • VESTRUM CVX
  • Case IH Puma Series: 160, 165, 170, 180, 185, 195, 200, 210, 215, 225, 230 (including CVX models)
  • Case IH Magnum Series: 210, 220, 225, 230, 255, 285
  • Case IH Maxxum Series: 110, 115, 120, 125, 130, 135, 140, 145

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the R1 solenoid connector and the main controller connector (e.g., X-950) for damaged pins, moisture, or poor connections.

  2. Disconnect the R1 synchronizer solenoid and measure the resistance across its terminals (acceptable range is 8 - 11 Ohms, typically around 10 Ohms).

  3. If the solenoid tests okay, disconnect the UCM controller connector, turn the ignition switch ON, and measure the voltage/continuity between the specific connector pin for the R1 solenoid and ground to check for a short or open wire.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the R1 solenoid

Power down the tractor and locate the R1 solenoid (often located in the bell housing or inside the transmission side cover, depending on the specific model).

  2. Disconnect the electrical connector

Disconnect the R1 solenoid electrical connector. (Note: You may also need to temporarily disconnect adjacent connectors like the F3/F4 solenoids or transmission oil temperature sender for clearance).

  3. Remove the faulty solenoid

If the diagnostic resistance test failed, remove the retaining hardware for the R1 synchronizer solenoid and extract the faulty solenoid.

  4. Install the new solenoid

Install the new OEM replacement solenoid and secure it.

  5. Reconnect sensors and connectors

Reconnect the R1 solenoid electrical connector and any other sensors disconnected during disassembly.

  6. Repair the wiring harness

If the diagnostic test pointed to the harness, repair or replace the damaged section of the transmission wire harness.

  7. Clear error code and test

Turn the ignition on, clear the error code from the UCM using the diagnostic menu or tool, and test the transmission system for normal operation.
