Case IH 2524 – Universal Control Module (UCM) or Transmission Controller / ECM: R1 solenoid - circuit fault

Issue description

The system has detected an electrical issue (such as an open circuit, short circuit to ground, or short circuit to power) in the circuit controlling the R1 (Reverse 1 / High Range) synchronizer solenoid.

Check the cause

  1. Check the wiring harness for a short circuit between the ECM connector pins or across the two coil terminals, and ensure the wiring harness is not damaged or pinched.

  2. Inspect the R1 synchronizer solenoid electrical connector for corrosion, pushed pins, or loose connections.

  3. Verify that the charging system is functioning correctly and that no external power supply is causing voltage irregularities.

  4. Measure the resistance of the R1 solenoid to determine if the coil itself has failed.

  5. Evaluate the Universal Control Module (UCM) or ECM if the wiring, connectors, and solenoid test fine.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the R1 synchronizer solenoid

    Often located on the transmission valve block or bell housing, depending on the specific model.

  2. Disconnect the R1 solenoid electrical connector

    Carefully disconnect the connector.

  3. Measure the resistance

    Using a multimeter, measure the resistance between solenoid terminal 1 and terminal 2.

  4. Verify the reading

    If the resistance indicated is not between 8 - 11 Ohms, the high range clutch / R1 solenoid is faulty.

  5. Extract the faulty R1 solenoid

    If the solenoid fails the resistance test, remove the retaining hardware and extract the faulty R1 solenoid.

  6. Install the replacement solenoid

    Install the replacement solenoid and reconnect the electrical harness.

  7. Clear the error code

    Once the repair is complete, use a diagnostic tool or the tractor's onboard display to clear the error code.

  8. Test the system

    Test the system for normal operation (a transmission calibration may be required after replacing transmission solenoids).
