Case IH 2528 – Transmission Control Module: F4/R2 synchronizer potentiometer – signal too low
Issue description
The voltage signal returning from the F4/R2 synchronizer position sensor is below the acceptable threshold. This condition typically points to an open circuit on the signal wire, a short circuit to ground, or a complete internal failure of the potentiometer itself.
Applies to these machines
4 machines- Optum
- Case IH Puma Series
- Case IH Magnum Series
- Case IH MX / TG Series
Check the cause
Check Pin 1 (Signal Wire - e.g., wire 7970) for an open circuit or a short circuit to ground between the sensor connector and the transmission controller.
Verify that Pin 2 (5V Reference - e.g., wire 5020P) is supplying a steady +5V reference voltage to the sensor.
Check Pin 3 (Sensor Ground - e.g., wire 60BR) for proper continuity to the sensor ground.
Inspect the X534 connector (3-way Bosch BDK 2.8 female) for moisture ingress, corrosion, or pushed-out pins.
Repair steps
Preparation
Turn off the tractor, relieve all hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the battery.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the F4/R2 synchronizer potentiometer on the right-hand side of the transmission housing.
Removal
Disconnect the 3-pin electrical connector (X534). Remove the retaining bolts securing the potentiometer to the transmission housing and carefully pull the sensor out.
Installation
Install the new potentiometer, ensuring the sensor tang aligns correctly with the synchronizer selector shaft. Secure the retaining bolts and reconnect the X534 electrical connector.
Calibration
Reconnect the battery. You must perform a transmission synchronizer calibration using the tractor's diagnostic interface or electronic service tool. The transmission controller needs to learn the new potentiometer's voltage sweep for the synchronizer positions.
