Case IH 2529 – UCM (Universal Control Module): Synchro not moving towards F4
Issue description
The transmission controller commands the F4/R2 synchronizer to move into the F4 position, but the synchronizer position potentiometer does not detect the expected movement. The measured synchronizer position remains lower than the prefixed threshold, indicating that the shift did not physically occur or the sensor failed to read it.

Check the cause
Clear the error code and test the system for normal operation to ensure it is not a transient glitch.
Attempt to run a transmission calibration. If the calibration fails, monitor for specific 'U' codes (e.g., U102 'F4 did not engage properly') to narrow down the issue.
Using the tractor's ADIC display (H Menu diagnostics), check the displayed potentiometer reading during calibration to see if the signal is erratic, out of range, or completely dead.
Check the resistance of the F4 transmission solenoid across its terminals. A healthy solenoid should typically read between 8 to 11 Ohms.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors between the UCM, the F4 solenoid, and the synchronizer potentiometer for open circuits, shorts to ground, or damaged pins.
Repair steps
Electrical Repair
If the wiring harness is damaged or connectors are corroded, repair or replace the affected sections.
Solenoid Replacement
If the F4 solenoid fails the resistance test (reads open or shorted), drain the necessary transmission fluid, remove the transmission side cover/valve block where the solenoids are housed, and replace the F4 solenoid.
Potentiometer Replacement
If the synchronizer potentiometer is sending erratic or no signals despite good wiring, replace the F4/R2 synchronizer potentiometer.
Mechanical Inspection
If the solenoid, potentiometer, and wiring are all functioning correctly, the issue is mechanical. The F4/R2 synchronizer is likely jammed, or there is a mechanical problem on the driveline. This requires splitting the tractor, disassembling the CVT transmission, and physically inspecting the synchronizer assembly, shift forks, and clutch packs for damage or binding.
Post-Repair Calibration
After replacing any electrical or mechanical transmission components, you must perform a full transmission calibration procedure to teach the UCM the new engagement points.
