Issue description

This code indicates an electrical fault in the circuit controlling the R2 (Reverse 2 / Range 2) transmission solenoid. The controller has detected that the circuit is either broken (open) or has shorted out to the chassis ground.

Check the cause

  1. Visual Inspection: Locate the transmission control valve block on the side of the transmission. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the R2 solenoid for chafing, melting, or pinch points that could cause a short to ground.

  2. Connector Check: Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector at the R2 solenoid. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture, or pushed-back terminals.

  3. Solenoid Resistance Test: Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the two pins of the R2 solenoid. If the reading is infinite (OL), the internal coil is open. If the reading is near zero or shows continuity to the solenoid housing/chassis, it is shorted to ground.

  4. Harness Continuity Test: Disconnect the harness at the Transmission Controller and at the R2 solenoid. Test the wires for continuity end-to-end, and test each wire for continuity to ground. If the harness is shorted, it must be repaired or replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Clean area

    Clean the area around the transmission control valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Ensure the tractor is parked on a level surface, the engine is off, and all hydraulic pressure is relieved.

  2. Disconnect connector

    Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector from the R2 solenoid.

  3. Remove retaining pin

    Using a suitable punch or tool, remove the retaining pin holding the R2 solenoid/proportional valve in the manifold block.

  4. Extract solenoid

    Carefully extract the plug, spring, and the faulty R2 solenoid from the valve block.

  5. Lubricate O-rings

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new R2 solenoid with clean transmission fluid (e.g., Case IH Akcela Nexplore) prior to installation.

  6. Install new solenoid

    Insert the new solenoid and spring into the manifold and secure it with the retaining pin.

  7. Reconnect connector

    Reconnect the 2-pin electrical connector.

  8. Clear fault codes

    Power on the tractor and clear the fault codes using the integrated control panel or diagnostic service tool.

  9. Calibrate transmission

    Run the tractor to operating temperature and perform a transmission calibration procedure as outlined in the service manual to ensure the new solenoid engages smoothly.
