Case IH 2534 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): R2 solenoid circuit fault

Issue description

This code indicates an electrical malfunction in the circuit controlling the R2 (Reverse 2) transmission solenoid. The system has detected that the circuit is either open, shorted to ground, shorted to power (12V), or has a resistance value outside of the expected operating range.

Applies to these machines

  • Optum
  • Case IH Puma Series (165, 170, 180, 185, 195, 200, 210, 215, 225, 230 including CVX)
  • Case IH Magnum Series (200, 210, 220, 225)
  • Case IH Maxxum Series

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness leading to the R2 solenoid for chafing, melting, or pinch points

  2. Disconnect the 2-pin electrical connector at the R2 solenoid and check for water ingress, corrosion, bent pins, or pushed-back terminals

  3. Perform a coil resistance test using a multimeter across the two pins of the R2 solenoid (an open reading or dead short indicates a failed coil)

  4. Check the continuity of the wiring harness from the R2 solenoid connector back to the transmission controller, verifying no short to ground or 12V

Repair steps

  1. Preparation

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and ensure all pressure is relieved from the hydraulic and transmission circuits before beginning work.

  2. Access the Valve Block

Locate the transmission control valve assembly. Clean the area around the solenoids thoroughly to prevent dirt from entering the transmission.

  3. Disconnect Wiring

Disconnect the R2 solenoid electrical connector. Depending on harness routing, you may also need to temporarily disconnect adjacent connectors (like the F2 solenoid or ring speed sensor) for clearance.

  4. Remove the Solenoid

Remove the retaining bolts or retaining pins holding the R2 solenoid/proportional valve in the manifold block.

  5. Extract the Valve

Carefully pull the R2 solenoid and valve assembly out of the bore. Remove the old O-rings and springs if they do not come out with the valve.

  6. Install the New Solenoid

Coat the new valve components and O-rings with clean transmission fluid (Case IH Akcela Nexplore Fluid or TSM Bio) prior to assembly. Insert the new solenoid into the bore.

  7. Secure and Reconnect

Reinstall the retaining pins or tighten the retaining bolts (standard torque for the control valve assembly bolts is typically 27 Nm, but verify with your specific model's manual). Reconnect the 2-pin electrical connector.

  8. Fluid Check & Calibration

Check the transmission fluid level and top up if necessary. Turn the key ON, clear the fault codes via the ADIC "H Menu" (diagnostic menu), and perform a transmission calibration procedure to ensure the new solenoid engages smoothly.

Parts you might need

(3)
  • Transmission R2 Solenoid / Proportional Valve

Exact OEM part number varies depending on whether the tractor is a CVT or Powershift. Refer to the specific machine's serial number in the parts catalog.

  • R2 Solenoid Electrical Connector (2-Pin Female)

    371614A1

Replaces # 12452587. Fits the R2 Solenoid, F1/F2 Solenoids, and Clutch Solenoids.

  • Transmission Fluid

Case IH Akcela Nexplore™ Fluid (Standard) or Case IH Akcela TSM BIO (if biodegradable fluid is used in your system).
