2535

Case IH 2535 – Transmission Control Module (Transmission ECU / TCU): F4/R2 synchroniser – neutral did not engage.

Issue description

The transmission controller commanded the F4/R2 synchronizer to return to its neutral position, but the synchronizer position potentiometer (sensor) did not detect the mechanism reaching the designated neutral window.

Applies to these machines

  • Optum
  • Case IH Magnum CVT series (180, 190, 200, 210, 240)
  • Case IH Puma CVX series (165, 180, 195, 210, 225)

Check the cause

  1. Check the F4/R2 synchronizer position potentiometer readings using the tractor's diagnostic 'H Menu' or a dealer service tool (expected values: 6-24 in R2, 41-56 in Neutral, 71-94 in F4).

  2. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the F4/R2 synchronizer potentiometer for damage, open circuits, or shorts to ground.

  3. Test the operation of the F4 and R2 shift solenoids (Solenoid Valve X542 for F4 and X536 for R2) to ensure a stuck valve is not preventing the shift cylinder from returning to neutral.

  4. Check for mechanical binding in the driveline, such as damaged synchronizer rings, a bent shifter fork, or a failed shift cylinder.

Repair steps

  1. Split the tractor

Safely support and split the tractor to access the transmission assembly.

  2. Remove the dropbox

Remove the dropbox assembly located between the engine and the transmission.

  3. Disassemble the rear of the transmission

Remove the CVT hydrostatic pump assembly, as well as the A and B clutches at the back of the speed transmission, to allow for internal disassembly.

  4. Remove front components

Remove the Mechanical Front Drive (MFD) driveshaft, the two input shafts, and the summing planetary gear assembly at the front of the transmission.

  5. Access the synchronizer

With the transmission stripped down, locate the F4/R2 output shaft and shift cylinders.

  6. Replace components

Remove the F4/R2 synchronizer assembly, inspecting the shifter forks and shift cylinders for excessive wear or binding. Replace the damaged synchronizer.

  7. Reassembly and calibration

Reassemble the transmission in reverse order, refill with the specified hydraulic/transmission fluid, and perform a full CVT transmission calibration to teach the ECU the new synchronizer engagement and neutral positions.
