2538

Case IH 2538 – UCM / TCM: Ring speed sensor – open circuit or short circuit to ground

Issue description

The control module is not receiving the proper electrical signal from the transmission's ring speed sensor due to a broken wire, a short to ground, or an internal failure of the sensor itself.

Applies to these machines

  • Optum
  • Case IH Puma series
  • Case IH Magnum series
  • Case IH Maxxum series

Check the cause

  1. Check if the tractor battery has been connected to an external power supply (like a jump starter or charger); disconnect it to rule out false voltage codes

  2. Inspect connector X526 (Ring Speed Sensor connector) on the right-hand top of the transmission for dirt, corrosion, moisture, or backed-out pins

  3. Test the wiring harness for continuity and shorts. Pin 1 (Wire 7400 Y) is the input, and Pin 2 (Wire 7000BL U) is the supply

  4. If wiring and connector are intact, test the ring gear speed sensor itself for internal failure

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure tractor

Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and engage the parking brake.

  2. Locate sensor

Locate the Ring Speed Sensor on the right-hand top of the transmission housing.

  3. Disconnect connector

Disconnect the X526 wiring harness connector from the sensor.

  4. Repair wiring

If wiring damage is found during the diagnostic phase, repair the open or shorted wire in the harness.

  5. Remove faulty sensor

If the wiring is good, remove the retaining bolt holding the ring speed sensor in place and pull the faulty sensor out of the transmission housing.

  6. Install new sensor

Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid and install it into the housing. Secure it with the retaining bolt.

  7. Reconnect connector

Reconnect the X526 wiring harness connector.

  8. Clear code and test

Turn the key on, clear the error code from the UCM/TCM, and test the tractor for normal operation to verify the fix.
