Case IH 2553 – UCM: Transmission oil pressure too low

Issue description

The system detects that the transmission oil pressure has dropped below the acceptable operating threshold.

Applies to these machines

  • Optum
  • Puma 130 CVX
  • Puma 165
  • Puma 180
  • Puma 195
  • Puma 210
  • Puma 225 CVX
  • Magnum MX210
  • Magnum MX230
  • Magnum MX255
  • Magnum MX285
  • Farmall 40
  • Farmall 45
  • Farmall 50
  • Farmall 115U

Check the cause

  1. Check for other active error codes (such as a sensor short circuit to +5V) and resolve those first

  2. Check the power supply to ensure the tractor battery has not been connected to an external power supply. Disconnect if present and test the system for normal operation

  3. Perform a manual pressure test on the transmission (referencing OEM manual section Hydraulic systems - Pressure test 35.000) to verify if the pressure is actually low or if the sensor is reading incorrectly

Repair steps

  1. Locate sensor

If the manual pressure test confirms that the transmission has proper hydraulic pressure, the issue is likely electrical. Locate the transmission oil pressure sensor (X-273) on the transmission case.

  2. Inspect wiring

Inspect the wiring harness and connector for the sensor to ensure there are no breaks or shorts to ground.

  3. Replace sensor

If the wiring is intact, remove the faulty transmission oil pressure sensor and replace it with a new one (a dab of thread sealant may be required).

  4. Inspect hydraulic circuit

If the manual pressure test shows that the pressure is actually low, you must inspect the hydraulic circuit for leaks, failing solenoids, or mechanical transmission faults.

  5. Clear code and test

Once the root cause of the error code has been rectified, clear the error code from the UCM and test the tractor for normal operation.

Parts you might need

(1)
  • Transmission Oil Pressure Sensor (Sensor X-273)

    121767A1

Direct replacement sensor that monitors transmission oil pressure and temperature. Plugs directly into the factory wiring harness. Installation typically requires removing a small access panel to reach the sensor location on the transmission case.
