Case IH 2557 (1044.05) - DEC – UCM (Universal Control Module) or Transmission Controller: Hydro 1 Solenoid – Open circuit or short circuit to ground
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected that the electrical circuit for the Hydrostat 1 (Hydro 1) control solenoid is incomplete (open) or shorted to ground. This prevents the solenoid from properly regulating hydraulic fluid flow and pressure in the hydrostatic transmission system.
Applies to these machines
5 machines- VESTRUM CVX
- Puma series (130–240 CVX/CVT)
- Magnum series (180–240)
- Maxxum series
- Optum CVT
Check the cause
Check for related transmission pressure codes (e.g., 2501, 2502, 2552, or 2553) to rule out broader hydraulic pressure or sensor faults.
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the Hydro 1 solenoid for chafed wires, broken lines, or a loose/corroded connector.
Disconnect the solenoid and use a multimeter to check the resistance across the solenoid pins to determine if the internal coil is open or shorted.
Check the harness side for continuity to the UCM and ensure there is no short to ground.
Repair steps
Locate the Solenoid
The Hydro 1 solenoid is generally located in the bell housing on short-wheelbase machines, or fitted on the internal side of the transmission side cover on long-wheelbase machines.
Preparation
Clean the area thoroughly around the solenoid to prevent dirt or debris from entering the transmission's hydraulic circuit.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical wiring harness connector from the solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or hardware holding the solenoid cartridge in the valve body, and carefully extract the faulty solenoid.
Installation
Lubricate the O-rings/seals on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve body and torque the retaining hardware to OEM specifications.
Reconnection
Reconnect the electrical connector, ensuring it clicks securely into place.
Clear and Test
Turn the key switch ON, connect your diagnostic tool (or use the integrated control panel), and clear the fault code. Start the tractor and test the transmission system for normal operation and check for any hydraulic leaks.
