Case IH 2578 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Instrumentation Control Unit (ICU): Model received does not match controller
Issue description
This fault occurs when the model configuration data received by a controller over the CAN bus does not match the model configuration that was permanently stored in its memory during its very first power-up.
Applies to these machines

- STX Steiger

Check the cause
Determine if the Instrumentation Control Unit (ICU) or Transmission Control Unit (TCU) was recently replaced or swapped from another tractor.
Physically verify the part number and model of the ICU currently installed on the tractor to ensure it is the correct hardware for that specific machine.
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) laptop to the tractor's 9-pin diagnostic port and perform a 'Controller status/version retrieval' to see exactly which model ID the ICU and TCU are broadcasting.
Repair steps
Connect the EST
Plug the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST) into the diagnostic port and pull up the active fault codes.
Verify the ICU Model
Check the model of the Instrumentation Control Unit (ICU) against the tractor's required specifications.
Replace the ICU (If Incorrect)
If the ICU was replaced by an ICU that is not supported by the control system (the models do not match up), you must remove it and replace it with the correct ICU for that specific tractor.
Replace the TCU (If ICU is Correct)
If the ICU models do match up and are correct for the tractor, the failure mode is within the Transmission Control Unit. You must replace the Transmission Control Unit.
Configure and Calibrate
Once the correct replacement controller is installed, use the EST to configure the new controller to the tractor's CAN network. You will likely need to navigate to the TRANS ADJUST menu in the EST to perform a full transmission and clutch calibration after replacing the TCU.
Clear Codes
Clear the inactive fault codes using the EST and cycle the key to ensure code 2578 does not return.
