Case IH 2583 – Braking System Control Module (XCM): Right brake pedal switch fault – electrical signals are inconsistent

Issue description

Occurs on machines fitted with ABS when the dual-circuit signals from the right brake pedal switch disagree or provide illogical states to the controller.

Applies to these machines

  • Optum
  • Puma CVX Series
  • Farmall Series
  • Maxxum Series
  • Magnum Series
  • Steiger Series

Check the cause

  1. Perform the H5 Switch Operation Test on the electronic display to see if code 'd13' and an audible tone register when the right brake pedal is depressed

  2. Perform a wiggle test on the wiring harness connected to the right brake pedal switch while watching the display for intermittent connection faults

  3. Verify the integrity of the wiring to the control unit (routing to CN1B pin 23 or CN2A pin 15 depending on the model)

  4. Check if the power supply to the right brake pedal switch is shorted to chassis ground, or if the switch is internally shorted

  5. Monitor the relevant brake/PTO circuit fuse (e.g., Fuse 38) with the key ON while depressing the right brake pedal to see if it drops out or blows

Repair steps

  1. Disconnect Power

Turn off the tractor and disconnect the battery to ensure safety while working on the electrical system.

  2. Locate the Switch

Locate the right brake pedal switch, which is mounted directly at the brake pedal assembly.

  3. Inspect Wiring

Examine the connector and wiring harness for corrosion, frayed wires, or loose pins. Repair any damaged wiring.

  4. Remove the Switch

Disconnect the electrical harness from the switch. Unbolt or unclip the faulty switch from its mounting bracket.

  5. Install the New Switch

Mount the replacement switch in the exact same location. Ensure it is properly aligned with the pedal mechanism so that the pedal depressor actuates the switch correctly.

  6. Reconnect and Test

Reconnect the electrical harness and the battery. Clear the fault codes from the XCM and perform the H5 Switch Operation Test again to verify that code 'd13' registers consistently when the right pedal is pressed.
