Case IH 2598 (519169.17) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / Transmission Control Module (TCM): Odd Clutch Pressure Sensor Signal is lower than expected

Issue description

Triggers when the transmission control system detects that the hydraulic pressure reading from the sensor monitoring the odd clutch circuit is below the commanded or expected threshold. This condition can be caused by an electrical fault, a failing transmission mechatronic unit/valve body, internal valve body gasket leaks, or mechanical failure within the odd clutch pack.

Check the cause

  1. Fluid Inspection: Check the transmission fluid level and condition. Ensure the oil was recently changed and inspect for metal particles or debris that would indicate internal mechanical failure.

  2. Wiring and Harness Check: Inspect the wiring harness and connectors for the odd clutch pressure sensor. Look for loose connections, chafed wires, or shorts to ground.

  3. Live Data Monitoring: Use a diagnostic scan tool to view real-time parameters of the transmission. Monitor the 'Odd Clutch Pressure Sensor' signal and the 'Valve Body Temperature' to see if the sensor reading drops out intermittently.

  4. Transmission Calibration: Attempt to recalibrate the transmission clutches. Park on a flat surface, engage the parking brake, navigate to the transmission calibration menu, select the 'Odd Clutch' screen, and observe the 'Odd mA' screen. If it fails to calibrate, it confirms a hard fault.

  5. Pressure Testing: If the sensor and wiring test good, remove the transmission command block/mechatronic unit and apply direct oil or air pressure to the odd clutch tube to check for internal leaks.

Repair steps

  1. Sensor/Electrical Replacement

    If diagnostics point to a failed sensor or harness, replace the Odd Clutch Pressure Sensor and repair any damaged wiring. Clear the codes and test drive.

  2. Mechatronic / Valve Body Repair

    If the sensor is functioning but pressure is bleeding off, inspect the mechatronic unit. Replace the valve body gaskets or rebuild the Clutch Pressure Control (CCP) system, as blown gaskets are a common cause of pressure loss.

  3. Internal Transmission Repair

    If applying pressure to the odd clutch tube reveals a massive internal leak, the transmission must be split. Remove the affected section to access the odd clutch pack. Inspect the clutch carrier, bearing housing, and segment rings for severe grooving or wear. Inspect the clutch piston and cushion spring (bevel washer). Replace the piston if cracked or broken, replace the cushion spring if snapped into pieces, and replace the odd clutch plates if burnt or worn beyond specification.

  4. Reassembly and Calibration

    Reassemble the transmission, refill with clean, approved hydraulic/transmission fluid, and perform a complete transmission calibration procedure for all clutches (Odd, Even, C1-2, etc.).
