Case IH 26 – Hitch Control Unit / Electronic Draft Control (EDC): Position Lever Potentiometer Control Voltage High

The control unit is receiving an electrical signal from the hitch position lever potentiometer that exceeds the normal upper voltage limit. The underlying condition is typically a damaged internal resistance track within the potentiometer itself, or a wiring harness failure where the signal wire is shorted to a +12 Volt power source.

   Inspect the position lever potentiometer connector to ensure it is securely connected, the pins are not damaged, pushed back, or corroded, and that the fit is tight.

   Use a multimeter to check the wiring harness between the potentiometer and the control module for a short circuit to +12 Volts.

   Check the physical mounting of the potentiometer, as loose position lever and rockshaft potentiometer shaft set screws will negatively affect hitch performance and can trigger erratic readings.

   Test the potentiometer itself with a multimeter to verify if the internal resistance track is damaged (open or shorted internally).

   Disconnect Power

   Disconnect the tractor's battery to prevent electrical spikes during repair.

   Access the Component

   Locate the position lever potentiometer. Depending on the model, it is typically positioned inside the cabin control armrest or the right-hand console near the hitch control levers.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the 3-terminal electrical connector from the potentiometer.

   Wiring Repair

   If the wiring harness tested faulty during diagnostics, repair or replace the affected wiring section to eliminate the short to +12 Volts.

   Remove Potentiometer

   If the potentiometer is internally damaged, loosen the set screws/mounting hardware and remove the faulty unit.

   Install New Part

   Install the new OEM replacement potentiometer and securely tighten the mounting hardware.

   Reassemble

   Reconnect the electrical connector and reassemble the armrest or console panels.

   Reconnect Power

   Reconnect the battery.

   Recalibrate

   Perform the hydraulic lift/hitch calibration procedure. The hitch must be recalibrated every time a hitch component is replaced or adjusted.
