Case IH 2604 (5913.15) - DEC – Transmission Control Module (TCM): Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor - temp too high

This fault code indicates that the transmission control system has detected a temperature reading from the transmission oil temperature sensor that exceeds the maximum safe operating threshold. This can be caused by an actual mechanical overheating condition (e.g., low fluid, blocked cooler, heavy load) or an electrical fault in the sensor circuit, such as a short to power (+V) or an open circuit, which forces the sensor voltage high and tricks the controller into reading a maximum temperature value.

   Check the transmission/hydraulic fluid level and inspect for a burnt smell or contamination (actual overheating cause).

   Inspect the transmission oil cooler and radiator for blockages, clearing any dirt, chaff, or debris restricting airflow (actual overheating cause).

   Inspect the pigtail and main harness leading to the transmission oil temperature sensor for rubbed wires, melted insulation, or corrosion inside connector pins.

   Check for a short to a high-voltage source or a broken wire (open circuit) in the sensor wiring, which triggers the voltage too high fault.

   Test the sensor's resistance using a multimeter. If it reads completely open (infinite resistance) or is shorted internally, the sensor has failed.

   Cool Down

   Allow the tractor to sit until the transmission housing and fluid are completely cool to prevent severe burns.

   Locate & Clean

   Locate the transmission oil temperature sensor on the transmission housing. Thoroughly clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt and debris from entering the transmission when the sensor is removed.

   Disconnect

   Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

   Removal

   Place a clean catch pan underneath the sensor area to catch any escaping transmission fluid. Use a wrench to unthread and remove the faulty sensor.

   Installation

   Thread the new OEM transmission oil temperature sensor into the port (some sensors, like part #82028133, use a 3/8"-18 thread). Tighten to the manufacturer's specified torque.

   Reconnect & Refill

   Reconnect the electrical harness. Check the transmission fluid dipstick/sight glass and top off any fluid lost during the swap using Case IH Hy-Tran Ultra (or the specified fluid for your model).

7. 7

   Clear Codes

   Turn the key on and use the diagnostic display or a service tool to clear the inactive fault code. Start the machine and verify the temperature reads normally.
