Case IH 2604 – VCM / UCM / TMF: 12VH voltage supply is low

Issue description

The control module is detecting that the 12-volt high-current (12VH) power supply input has dropped below the acceptable operational threshold.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the main power voltage level from the tractor battery is normal (above 12V).

  2. Check the fuses supplying the 12VH circuit (e.g., PWR fuse 1 in UCM enclosure or Fuse 12 in the main cab/transmission fuse block).

  3. Test the power control relay in the UCM/VCM enclosure for proper operation and check for burnt contacts or high internal resistance.

  4. Inspect the wiring harness for the 12VH circuit between the battery/fuse panel and the control module for corrosion, loose pins, or chafed wires.

  5. Disconnect the harness at the module and measure the voltage at the 12VH input pin to identify potential high resistance in the harness.

Repair steps

  1. Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the battery ground cable to ensure safety.

  2. Locate the UCM/VCM/TMF enclosure and open the fuse/relay panel.

  3. Inspect and test the specific fuse for the 12VH circuit using a multimeter for continuity. Replace if blown or heavily oxidized.

  4. Remove the power control relay for the 12VH circuit. Test it with a multimeter and a 12V power source. If it fails to click or shows high resistance across the switched contacts, replace the relay.

  5. Inspect the wiring harness connectors at the module. Clean any corrosion using electrical contact cleaner and ensure the pins are tight and not pushed back into the connector housing.

  6. If the fuse and relay are good, trace the 12VH wire back to the power source, repairing any damaged or corroded sections of the wire using proper soldering and heat-shrink techniques.

  7. Reconnect the battery, turn the key on, and clear the fault codes using the Electronic Service Tool (EST) or the in-cab display monitor.

  8. Operate the machine (or shift the transmission) to verify the fault code 2604 does not return.
