Issue description

This fault indicates a plausibility error regarding the transmission's 6/8 synchronizer. The Drivetrain Electronic Control (DEC) module is receiving a valid electrical signal from the 6/8 synchronizer position sensor, but the data reading (voltage/resistance) is falling below the expected normal operational range. This typically means the synchronizer is failing to move to its commanded position, is not engaging fully, or the position sensor itself is failing and reporting an inaccurately low value during the system's plausibility check.

Check the cause

  1. Verify the transmission fluid level and ensure the oil quality meets Case IH specifications (e.g., MAT 3540).

  2. Attempt to run a quick transmission calibration using the tractor's diagnostic display and monitor if it fails on the 6/8 synchronizer.

  3. Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the 6/8 synchronizer position sensor and the 6/8 synchro solenoid for shorts to ground, breaks, or corrosion.

  4. Swap the 6/8 synchro solenoid with another accessible solenoid (such as the 1/4 synchro solenoid) to see if the fault follows the solenoid.

  5. Test the signal voltage of the 6/8 position sensor. If it reads lower than expected, swap it with a known good sensor (like the Forward/Reverse synchro sensor).

  1. Verify the fault

    Connect the diagnostic tool or use the onboard display to confirm code 2616 (6157.01) is active.

  2. Perform electrical testing

    Perform the sensor and solenoid swaps mentioned in the diagnostic steps to isolate the component.

  3. Replace faulty electrical components

    If the fault moves with the sensor or the solenoid during testing, replace the faulty position sensor or shift solenoid.

  4. Perform mechanical inspection

  5. Perform internal repair

    If the forks are moving but the gear isn't engaging, or if the forks are jammed, split the transmission to replace the worn 6/8 synchronizer assembly, synchronizer rings, or damaged shift forks.

  6. Recalibrate transmission

    After replacing any sensors, solenoids, or internal synchronizer parts, refill the transmission fluid and perform a full transmission calibration to clear the code and teach the DEC the new engagement parameters.
