Case IH 2616 – ZTC controller: Transmission direction clutches supply feedback (RED5 input) plausibility mismatch

Issue description

The controller is seeing a logical contradiction: The transmission relay is commanded active, but the controller detects no voltage at connector C070 pin 22. OR the transmission relay is inactive, but the controller is detecting voltage at connector C070 pin 22. A short circuit to the minus battery (ground) on this circuit will blow the controller's fuse.

Check the cause

  1. Check the ZTC Controller Fuse: Inspect the fuse powering the ZTC controller. If it is blown, this confirms the presence of a short circuit to the minus battery (ground).

  2. Test the Transmission Relay: Verify that the transmission relay is mechanically and electrically functioning (opening and closing properly when commanded).

  3. Voltage Drop / Pin Check: Back-probe connector C070 at pin 22. Verify if voltage is present when the transmission relay is active, and absent when inactive.

  4. Harness Inspection: Trace the RED5 input wiring between the transmission relay and connector C070 pin 22. Look for chafed wires causing a short to ground or an open circuit.

Repair steps

  1. Replace fuse

    Replace the blown fuse based on diagnostic findings.

  2. Replace relay

    Replace a sticking transmission relay based on diagnostic findings.

  3. Repair wiring

    Repair a shorted wire in the harness based on diagnostic findings.
