Case IH 2617 (6157.00) - DEC – DEC: Transmission Synchronizer 6 - Data Valid But Above Normal Operational Range
Issue description
The Driveline Electronic Controller (DEC) is performing a plausibility check on the Synchro 6/8 assembly. The controller is receiving a valid signal from the synchronizer's position sensor, but the physical position or speed reading is outside the expected mechanical range. This typically indicates that the synchronizer is failing to engage properly, slipping, or experiencing severe mechanical wear (such as worn dog teeth or damaged synchronizer rings), preventing smooth gear transitions.
Applies to these machines
10 machines- MAXXUM T4E
- Puma 165 to 240
- Magnum 180
- Magnum 190
- Magnum 200
- Magnum 210
- Magnum 220
- Optum 250 CVX
- Optum 270 CVX
- Optum 300 CVX
Check the cause
Check the transmission/hydraulic oil level and inspect the transmission oil filter for heavy metal shavings or brass debris, which confirms mechanical synchronizer failure.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors going to the transmission speed sensors (input/output) and the synchronizer position sensors for corrosion, moisture, or damaged wires.
Verify that the transmission clutch and shuttle solenoid valves are receiving proper hydraulic pressure to actuate the synchronizers.
Attempt to perform a transmission calibration using the tractor's onboard display or electronic service tool to see if the DEC can relearn the shift points.
Repair steps
Preparation
Drain the transmission and hydraulic fluid. Disconnect the battery.
Tractor Split
Depending on the model, remove the cab mounts, disconnect all hydraulic lines, linkages, and electrical harnesses, and split the tractor to access the transmission housing.
Transmission Teardown
Remove the transmission assembly and disassemble the case to access the gear shafts.
Synchronizer Replacement
Locate the 6/8 synchronizer assembly. Inspect the sliding sleeve, fixed sleeve/gear, and synchronizer rings for heat damage, scoring, or worn dog teeth. Remove the damaged assembly and press the new synchronizer assembly onto the shaft.
Reassembly
Reassemble the transmission using new seals, gaskets, and thrust washers.
Reinstallation
Reconnect the transmission to the tractor, reattach the cab/harnesses, and refill the system with OEM-specified Case IH transmission fluid.
Final Calibration
Connect a diagnostic tool and clear the permanent fault codes from the DEC. You must perform a full transmission calibration so the DEC can learn the exact engagement points of the new synchronizer.
