Case IH 2623 (6153.16) - DEC – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) or Gear Control Unit (GCU): Synchro 2/4 or 6/8 disengage error
Issue description
The synchronizer sleeve responsible for shifting between gears 2 and 4 (or 6 and 8) is failing to complete its movement from an engaged position back to neutral. This indicates a mechanical or hydraulic failure within a powershift, CVT, or automated manual transmission, often caused by a synchromesh malfunction where the gear sleeve becomes stuck or is interrupted due to abnormally high hydraulic pressure.
Applies to these machines
1 machine- MAXXUM T4E
Check the cause
Check Transmission Fluid and Pressure: Verify that the transmission hydraulic fluid is at the correct level and that line pressures are not abnormally high, which can prevent the synchronizer from disengaging.
Electrical/Solenoid Check: Test the shift solenoid valves controlling the 2/4 and 6/8 synchronizers for short circuits (to high or low source) or open circuits.
CAN Bus Communication: Verify that there are no timeout errors on the CAN bus between the TCU and the engine ECM, which can interrupt shift commands.
Calibration: Check if the transmission clutches and synchronizers require a re-calibration routine via the diagnostic tool.
Repair steps
Connect the diagnostic service tool and attempt to run a transmission synchronizer/clutch calibration.
If calibration fails, safely lock out the machine and relieve hydraulic pressure.
Access the transmission control valve body.
Inspect the wiring harness and connectors leading to the 2/4 and 6/8 shift solenoids for corrosion or damage. Replace if necessary.
Remove and test the specific GCU solenoid valve controlling the affected synchronizer. Replace the solenoid valve if it is sticking or fails electrical resistance tests.
If the electrical and hydraulic controls are functioning, the transmission may require a teardown to physically inspect and replace the binding 2/4 or 6/8 synchronizer sleeve and hub.
