Case IH 2623 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Short circuit to minus at N_Ab2 speed sensor

Issue description

The control module is detecting a continuous ground (zero voltage) on the sensor's signal circuit, which prevents the module from reading the rotational speed of the transmission output shaft.

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the engine is stopped, the key is removed, and the transmission oil has cooled down before beginning diagnostics.

  2. Disconnect the battery terminals to prevent module damage before working on electrical systems or unplugging TCU connectors.

  3. Trace the wiring harness from the N_Ab2 sensor on the transmission housing back to the TCU. Look for pinched wires, worn insulation rubbing against the chassis, or melted wires causing a direct short to ground.

  4. Inspect the sensor connector and the TCU pins for moisture, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the signal wire to the ground wire.

  5. Test the sensor's internal resistance with a multimeter. If the internal circuitry has collapsed and is shorting to its own ground pin, the sensor itself is the point of failure.

Repair steps

  1. Park and secure tractor

    Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, block the wheels, and turn off the engine.

  2. Disconnect battery

    Disconnect the battery (negative terminal first).

  3. Locate sensor

    Locate the N_Ab2 output speed sensor on the transmission housing (refer to the specific model's service manual for exact housing placement, usually near the rear output shaft).

  4. Clean area

    Clean the area around the sensor to prevent dirt from entering the transmission housing.

  5. Unplug connector

    Unplug the electrical connector from the sensor.

  6. Repair wiring

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a wiring short to the chassis, repair the damaged section of the harness using OEM-approved waterproof splices, or replace the transmission harness section.

  7. Remove faulty sensor

    If the sensor is faulty, remove the retaining bolt and carefully pull the speed sensor out of the transmission housing.

  8. Lubricate O-ring

    Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid (e.g., Case IH Akcela Hy-Tran).

  9. Install new sensor

    Insert the new N_Ab2 sensor into the housing and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque specification.

  10. Reconnect connector

    Reconnect the electrical connector securely.

  11. Reconnect battery

    Reconnect the battery (positive terminal first, then negative).

  12. Clear codes and test

    Clear the fault codes from the TCU using a diagnostic tool and test drive the tractor to verify the TCU is receiving the N_Ab2 speed signal and the code does not return.
