Case IH 2630 – ZTC: Logical error at the transmission input shaft speed sensor (N_An)
Issue description
The transmission controller is receiving a signal from the input speed sensor, but the data does not make logical sense when compared to other sensor inputs (such as engine speed or the transmission output speed, N_Ab). This typically points to an erratic signal, a failing sensor, or a wiring issue rather than a complete open/short circuit.

Check the cause
Harness & Connector Inspection: Check the wiring harness between the ZTC (Transmission ECU) and the input speed sensor. Look for broken wires, bent pins at the TCU connector, or corrosion.
Signal Plausibility Check: Connect a diagnostic tool and monitor the live data for 'Transmission input speed' (N_An) and 'Output speed' (N_Ab). Look for erratic readings, drop-offs, or spikes in the N_An signal while the engine is running.
Sensor Resistance/Continuity: Test the sensor's internal resistance (standard inductive/Hall-effect speed sensors typically read around 1kΩ).
Physical Inspection: Remove the sensor and check the magnetic tip. Excessive metal shavings or debris on the sensor tip can distort the magnetic field and cause a 'logical error' reading.
Repair steps
Preparation
Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, and turn off the battery disconnect switch.
Drain Fluid (if applicable)
Depending on the specific transmission model, the sensor may be located below the fluid level. If so, drain the transmission oil into a clean receptacle.
Locate the Sensor
Locate the input speed sensor (N_An) on the transmission housing. It is typically located near the front of the transmission/clutch housing area.
Removal
Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Remove the retaining bolt(s) and carefully pull the sensor out of the transmission housing.
Installation
Clean the mounting surface. Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new sensor and torque the retaining bolt to OEM specifications.
Reassembly
Reconnect the wiring harness. Refill the transmission fluid to the proper level using the approved ZF/CNH transmission fluid.
Calibration/Clearing
Reconnect the battery, connect the diagnostic tool, clear the ZTC fault codes, and perform a test drive to ensure the N_An signal is stable and the code does not return.
