Case IH 2631 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU) / ZTC: Transmission input shaft speed sensor measured speed not corresponding with engine speed CAN signal

The transmission controller is detecting a discrepancy between the engine RPM broadcast over the CAN bus and the transmission input shaft speed sensor's physical measurement.

   Monitor live data on the in-cab diagnostic display to compare Engine Speed and Transmission Input Speed for dropouts or zero readings

   Inspect the input shaft speed sensor pigtail and main harness connector for rubbed wires, corrosion, or pushed-out pins

   Unplug the sensor and use a multimeter to check for proper resistance across the pins and continuity to ground

   Listen for abnormal noises from the bell housing area that might indicate a mechanical slip or failing damper plate

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the negative battery cable.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the transmission input speed sensor. On ZF transmissions, it is typically threaded or bolted into the side or top of the front transmission housing.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical connector from the sensor. Clean the area around the sensor base to prevent dirt from falling into the transmission. Remove the retaining bolt (usually a 10mm or 12mm head) or unthread the sensor if it is a screw-in type. Carefully pull the sensor out of the housing.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new sensor into the bore and seat it fully. Install and tighten the retaining bolt to the OEM torque spec (usually around 10-15 Nm).

   Reassembly

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.

   Calibration/Clearing

   Turn the key on. Access the diagnostic menu on the cab display and clear the inactive 2631 fault code. Start the tractor and test drive to ensure the code does not return and the transmission shifts normally.
