Case IH 2632 – ZTC (Transmission Controller): Transmission output shaft speed sensor not plausible, number of teeth N_Ab1 is less than N_Ab2

The transmission controller is detecting an inconsistency between the dual signals (N_Ab1 and N_Ab2) generated by the transmission output shaft speed sensor. The controller is reading fewer gear teeth passing sensor 1 than sensor 2, which points to a signal dropout, an open/short circuit, or a physical failure of the sensor itself.

   Inspect the transmission speed sensor connector ends (X551) for damage, corrosion, or bent/dislocated pins.

   Disconnect the sensor connector and probe cavity A for a 5-volt reference voltage with the key ON. If not present, trace wiring back to the controller for an open or short circuit.

   Measure resistance from cavity B of the connector to chassis ground to ensure continuity (less than 1 ohm). Repair ground circuit if resistance is high.

   Check for cascading codes (TRANS 3020, HITCH 3010, STEER 3010) indicating the Tractor Data Bus has disabled dependent systems.

   Preparation

   Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn the engine off, and remove the key. Disconnect the battery if required by standard safety protocol.

   Locate the Sensor

   Locate the transmission output shaft speed sensor on the transmission housing.

   Removal

   Disconnect the electrical connector (X551) from the sensor. Remove the retaining fastener(s) and carefully pull the sensor out of the transmission housing.

   Installation

   Lubricate the O-ring on the new sensor with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new sensor into the housing and tighten the retaining fastener to OEM torque specs.

   Reconnection

   Reconnect the electrical harness, ensuring the locking tab clicks into place.

   Clear Codes & Calibrate

   Turn the key ON. Access the "Trans Setup" menu on the cab display to retrieve and clear the inactive fault codes. Depending on the model, a transmission calibration may be required after replacing speed sensors to ensure the inching pedal and clutch engagement operate within a valid range.
