Case IH 2639 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Range clutch K1 is open circuit
Issue description
The control module has sent a voltage signal to the K1 clutch solenoid but detected no current return (infinite resistance). This means the electrical path is broken, preventing the solenoid from actuating and causing a loss of specific gears.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness from the TCU to the transmission control valve block for chafed wires, broken lines, or loose/corroded pins at the K1 solenoid connector.
Disconnect the electrical connector at the K1 clutch solenoid and use a digital multimeter to measure the resistance across the solenoid pins. An infinite (O.L) reading indicates an internal break.
Check the continuity of the wiring harness between the TCU output pin for Clutch K1 and the solenoid connector.
Verify that the TCU is outputting the correct voltage to the K1 circuit when commanded.
Repair steps
Disconnect Power
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical shorts and TCU damage.
Locate the Solenoid
Locate the transmission control valve block (mechatronics unit) on the side or top of the transmission housing. Identify the K1 clutch proportional solenoid valve.
Remove the Solenoid
Clean the area around the valve block to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Disconnect the electrical harness from the K1 solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or snap rings holding the K1 solenoid in the valve body. Carefully pull the solenoid valve out of the bore. Have a catch pan ready, as a small amount of transmission fluid will leak out.
Install the New Solenoid
Lubricate the O-rings on the new K1 solenoid valve with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid into the valve block bore, ensuring it seats fully without pinching the O-rings. Install and torque the retaining bolts to the OEM specification.
Reassembly and Testing
Reconnect the electrical harness to the new solenoid. Reconnect the battery. Top off the transmission fluid if any significant amount was lost. Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the fault code from the TCU. Start the machine and perform a test drive, shifting through the gears to verify that the K1 clutch engages smoothly and the code does not return.
