Case IH 2641 – ZF Transmission Controller (ZTC): Open circuit at the Range Clutch K3

Issue description

The transmission controller monitors the electrical circuits for the proportional solenoid valves that control the transmission clutches. An 'open circuit' means that the electrical path to the K3 clutch solenoid is broken, disconnected, or the solenoid coil itself has failed internally (infinite resistance). When this occurs, the controller cannot actuate the K3 clutch, and the transmission will typically default to neutral or a restricted limp-home mode to prevent mechanical damage.

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the external wiring harness and connectors between the TCU and the transmission gearbox for rubbed-through wires, corrosion, or backed-out pins.

  2. Disconnect the connector at the transmission and measure the resistance of the K3 clutch solenoid circuit back to the TCU to rule out a broken wire in the main harness.

  3. If the external harness is intact, check the internal wire harness of the gearbox that leads directly to the K3 solenoid.

  4. Test the K3 proportional solenoid directly with a multimeter. If it reads infinite ohms (O.L), the solenoid coil is internally broken (open circuit) and must be replaced.

Repair steps

  1. Safely park the machine on level ground, turn off the engine, relieve hydraulic pressure, and disconnect the negative battery terminal.

    Ensure the machine is safe to work on before beginning repairs.

  2. If diagnostics point to a failed solenoid, drain the transmission fluid (or drain enough to safely access the transmission control valve block).

    Prepare the transmission for access to the internal components.

  3. Remove the transmission control valve cover/manifold block where the proportional solenoids are housed.

    Gain access to the proportional solenoids.

  4. Disconnect the internal wiring harness from the K3 clutch solenoid.

    Free the solenoid from the electrical circuit.

  5. Remove the retaining hardware and extract the defective K3 proportional solenoid cartridge valve.

    Take out the faulty component.

  6. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve body. Torque the retaining bolts to the manufacturer's specification.

    Install the new solenoid securely and safely.

  7. Reconnect the internal wiring harness, ensuring the connector clicks into place.

    Restore the electrical connection to the new solenoid.

  8. Reinstall the transmission valve cover using a new gasket or O-rings.

    Seal the transmission control valve block.

  9. Refill the transmission with the specified Case IH hydraulic/transmission fluid and replace the transmission filter.

    Restore fluid levels and ensure clean filtration.

  10. Reconnect the battery, clear the fault codes using an electronic service tool, and perform a transmission clutch calibration.

    Calibration is strictly required after replacing a clutch solenoid to readjust the clutch filling time and pressure for smooth gear shifts.
