Case IH 2642 – ZTC: ZTC - Range clutch K4 is open circuit

Issue description

The controller is monitoring the electrical circuit for the K4 solenoid valve and has detected a complete loss of electrical continuity (infinite resistance). Because the circuit is 'open,' the controller cannot send the electrical current required to actuate the K4 solenoid, meaning the transmission will be unable to engage the K4 gear range.

Check the cause

  1. Ensure the engine is stopped, the machine is parked safely, the transmission oil has cooled down, and residual pressure is discharged from the hydraulic systems.

  2. Disconnect the battery terminals (negative first) to prevent short circuits before working on the electrical systems.

  3. Trace the wiring harness from the ZTC to the transmission valve block. Look for chafed wires, broken lines, or damage caused by field debris.

  4. Unplug the connector at the K4 solenoid valve. Inspect the pins for corrosion, moisture ingress, or pushed-out terminals.

  5. Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the K4 solenoid coil. If the multimeter reads 'OL' (Open Loop) or infinite resistance, the internal coil has failed.

  6. If the solenoid tests within normal resistance specifications, test the continuity of the wiring harness between the solenoid connector and the ZTC pinout to isolate the break in the wire.

Repair steps

  1. Isolate the Machine

    Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and remove the key. Disconnect the battery.

  2. Locate the Valve Block

    Access the transmission control valve block, typically located on the side or top of the transmission housing.

  3. Identify the K4 Solenoid

    Using the specific tractor's hydraulic schematic, identify which of the proportional solenoid valves corresponds to the K4 range clutch.

  4. Repair Wiring (If Applicable)

    If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire in the harness, splice and repair the wire using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the damaged harness section.

  5. Replace the Solenoid (If Applicable)

    Clean the area around the K4 solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the transmission valve body. Disconnect the electrical plug. Remove the retaining bolts or snap ring holding the solenoid in place. Extract the faulty K4 solenoid valve. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Install the new solenoid and torque the fasteners to the OEM specification.

  6. Reassembly

    Reconnect the electrical plug securely. Reconnect the battery (positive first, then negative).

  7. Calibration

    Clear the fault codes from the ZTC via the tractor's diagnostic display or EST (Electronic Service Tool). Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure to allow the ZTC to learn the fill times and pressures of the new K4 solenoid.
