Case IH 2643 – ZTC: Range Clutch BG Open Circuit
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected infinite resistance (no current flow) in the electrical circuit that controls the BG range clutch solenoid. Because the circuit is open, the controller cannot actuate this solenoid, meaning the transmission will be unable to engage the specific speed range controlled by the BG clutch. This typically forces the transmission into a limp-home mode or restricts range shifting.

Check the cause
Disconnect the wiring harness at the ZTC and at the transmission solenoid block. Use a multimeter to check for continuity on the power and ground wires dedicated to the Range Clutch BG solenoid. Look for a broken wire or a rubbed-through harness.
Inspect the pins at both the ZTC connector and the transmission housing connector. Look for pushed-out pins, bent terminals, corrosion, or fluid intrusion (oil wicking into the harness).
Measure the internal resistance of the Range Clutch BG solenoid directly at its pins. If the multimeter reads OL (Open Loop) or infinite resistance, the solenoid coil has failed internally.
Repair steps
Prepare the tractor
Park the tractor on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery terminals (negative first) to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the valve block
Locate the transmission control valve block on the ZF transmission housing where the range solenoids are housed. Clean the surrounding area to prevent dirt from entering the transmission.
Repair harness (if applicable)
If the diagnostic checks revealed a broken wire, splice and repair the wire using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the affected transmission harness section.
Replace solenoid (if applicable)
If the solenoid tested open, disconnect its electrical plug. Remove the retaining fasteners holding the BG clutch solenoid in the valve block. Carefully extract the faulty solenoid. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid and torque the retaining bolts to the manufacturer's specification.
Reassemble components
Reconnect the solenoid electrical plug and ensure the locking tab clicks into place. Reconnect the battery.
Calibrate transmission
Connect a diagnostic tool (such as the Case IH Electronic Service Tool) to clear the inactive 2643 fault code. Perform a transmission clutch calibration routine so the ZTC can learn the engagement point of the new BG solenoid.
