Case IH 2646 (6156.14) - DEC – TCU: Synchro 5 Unwanted Engagement or Disengagement

This fault condition indicates that the transmission control system has detected the 5th gear synchronizer (Synchro 5) acting erratically, either engaging without a command or disengaging unexpectedly. The underlying condition is typically an electrical failure in the Synchro 5 solenoid circuit, a faulty synchronizer potentiometer/sensor, or a mechanical failure preventing the synchronizer from holding its position.

   Verify if the synchronizer calibration values are out of tolerance (which can trigger neutral errors or engagement faults).

   Test the Synchro 5 solenoid for an open circuit or a short to 12V.

   Check the 4/5 Synchro Potentiometer signal to ensure the voltage is not reading too high or too low.

   Inspect the wiring harnesses and connectors leading to the Synchro 5 solenoid, ensuring connectors are not swapped (e.g., mid and low synchro solenoid connectors swapped) or damaged.

   Recalibrate the transmission

   Enter the tractor's diagnostic mode and perform a clutch and synchronizer calibration. Move the shuttle lever to the forward drive position and follow the on-screen prompts to recalibrate the synchronizers.

   Inspect and test wiring

   If calibration fails or the code returns, trace the wiring from the TCU to the Synchro 5 solenoid. Repair any broken wires or corroded pins.

   Replace the solenoid

   If the wiring is intact but the solenoid fails resistance testing (indicating an open or short circuit), drain the necessary transmission fluid, locate the Synchro 5 solenoid on the transmission valve block, and replace it.

   Mechanical inspection

   If the electrical circuits and sensors are functioning properly but the synchronizer still disengages, the transmission may require a teardown to inspect the internal 5th gear synchronizer assembly for worn synchro rings, springs, or hubs.
