Case IH 2646 – ZTC: Open Circuit at Clutch KV
Issue description
The transmission control unit has detected infinite resistance or a complete break in the electrical circuit that operates the Clutch KV (Forward direction clutch) proportional valve/solenoid, causing the transmission to default to neutral or a limp home mode.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the wiring harness and connectors running from the ZTC (TCU) to the transmission gearbox for disconnected plugs, corroded pins, or rubbed-through wire insulation.
Perform a solenoid resistance test by disconnecting the connector at the Clutch KV proportional valve and measuring resistance across the pins. An infinite reading indicates the solenoid coil has failed internally.
Perform a harness continuity test between the transmission connector and the ZTC controller pins. An open circuit reading isolates the problem to a broken wire in the harness.
Repair steps
Secure the Machine
Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery ground to prevent electrical shorts.
Locate the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve block on the side/top of the transmission housing. Identify the proportional valve designated for Clutch KV (Forward).
Isolate the Fault
Disconnect the electrical plug to the KV solenoid.
Replace the Solenoid (If Defective)
If your multimeter confirmed the solenoid is open/dead, remove the retaining bolts or snap ring holding the KV proportional valve in the valve block. Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid, insert it into the block, and secure it.
Repair the Wiring (If Defective)
If the solenoid was good but the harness failed the continuity test, trace the harness back to the ZTC. Locate the break (often near pinch points or areas of high vibration) and splice in a repair wire using weather-sealed connectors, or replace the affected harness section.
Reassembly and Testing
Reconnect all electrical plugs and the battery. Turn the key on, access the diagnostic menu via the cab monitor, and clear the stored 2646 fault code. Start the machine and test forward engagement to ensure the clutch operates smoothly and the code does not return.
