Case IH 2648 – ZF Transmission Controller (ZTC) / TCU: Short circuit to ground at clutch K1
Issue description
The transmission controller monitors the electrical circuit of the proportional solenoid valve that controls the K1 range clutch. The controller has detected that the measured resistance value of the valve is out of limit or the voltage at the K1 valve is too low, meaning the electrical current is bypassing the intended load and going directly to the chassis ground.

Check the cause
Trace the wiring harness from the ZF Transmission Controller (TCU) to the K1 clutch solenoid. Look for pinched wires, melted insulation, or areas where the wire might be rubbing against the tractor chassis.
Disconnect the electrical connector at the K1 clutch solenoid. Use a multimeter (ohmmeter) to check for a short to ground on the harness side (between the signal pin and the chassis ground).
Measure the resistance across the pins of the K1 solenoid itself. If the resistance is out of the specified limit (reading near zero ohms), the solenoid coil is internally shorted.
Inspect the connector pins at both the TCU and the solenoid for corrosion, moisture, or bent pins that could bridge the circuit to ground.
Repair steps
Depressurize and Power Down
Park the tractor on a level surface, turn off the engine, and disconnect the battery's negative terminal. Ensure all hydraulic and pneumatic pressure is discharged from the circuits before beginning work.
Wiring Repair
If the diagnostic checks revealed a short in the OEM wiring harness, repair the chafed wire using proper splicing techniques and heat-shrink tubing, or replace the affected harness section.
Solenoid Replacement
Locate the transmission control valve block. Disconnect the wiring harness from the K1 clutch solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts or clips holding the K1 solenoid in the valve block. Extract the faulty K1 solenoid and discard its O-rings. Lubricate the O-rings on the new K1 solenoid with clean transmission fluid and install it into the valve block. Torque the retaining bolts to the OEM specification and reconnect the wiring harness.
Reassembly and Fluid Check
Reinstall any covers removed, reconnect the battery, and top up the transmission fluid to the correct level if any was lost during the repair.
Calibration
Connect the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST). Clear the inactive 2648 fault code. Perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure so the TCU can learn the fill time and engagement point of the new K1 solenoid.
