Case IH 2649 – Transmission Control Unit (TCU): Range Clutch K2 Proportional Solenoid Valve Short Circuit to Ground
Issue description
The electrical circuit controlling the Range Clutch K2 proportional solenoid valve has a short circuit to ground, causing the electrical current to escape directly to the vehicle's chassis. This prevents the controller from properly modulating the K2 clutch, resulting in the transmission defaulting to neutral or entering a restricted limp-home mode.

Check the cause
Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness from the TCU to the transmission valve block for chafed insulation, pinched wires, or melted sections touching the metal chassis.
Disconnect the harness at the TCU and the transmission bulkhead and inspect for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could bridge the circuit to ground.
Disconnect the K2 solenoid and use a multimeter to measure the resistance between the solenoid's power pin and the solenoid body/vehicle ground (should read as an open circuit; continuity indicates an internal short).
With both ends of the harness disconnected, test the K2 signal wire for continuity to the vehicle ground to verify if the wiring harness itself is shorted.
Repair steps
Prepare machine for service
Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, lower all implements to the ground, and turn off the engine.
Disconnect battery
Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.
Locate valve block
Locate the transmission control valve block (typically mounted on the side or top of the transmission housing).
Repair wiring harness (if shorted)
Open the wire loom at the site of the short. Cut out the damaged section of the wire, solder in a new section of equivalent gauge, and seal it with marine-grade heat shrink. Secure the harness away from sharp edges.
Replace K2 solenoid (if internally shorted)
Thoroughly clean the area around the transmission valve block to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system. Disconnect the electrical connector from the K2 solenoid. Remove the retaining bolts holding the K2 solenoid valve in place and carefully extract it. Lubricate the O-rings on the new K2 solenoid with clean transmission fluid. Insert the new solenoid and torque the retaining bolts to the OEM specifications.
Reconnect electrical components
Reconnect the electrical connector and the negative battery cable.
Clear fault codes
Connect a diagnostic tool to clear the inactive fault codes from the TCU.
Test drive
Start the machine and perform a test drive, shifting through all gears to ensure the K2 clutch engages smoothly without triggering the code.
