Case IH 2651 – ZTC: Range clutch K4 is shorted to ground
Issue description
The transmission controller has detected that the voltage on the circuit controlling the K4 clutch proportional valve (solenoid) is too low, meaning the circuit is shorting directly to the chassis ground.

Check the cause
Inspect the wiring harness running from the ZTC to the transmission valve block for chafing, melting, or rubbing against the chassis.
Disconnect the K4 clutch solenoid and measure resistance across the coil pins with a multimeter to check for an internal short.
Inspect the ZTC and transmission valve block connectors for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins.
With the ZTC and solenoid disconnected, check for continuity between the K4 signal wire and chassis ground to isolate a harness short.
Repair steps
Power Down
Park the machine on a level surface, engage the parking brake, turn off the ignition, and disconnect the battery to prevent electrical spikes.
Access the Valve Block
Locate the transmission control valve block (usually mounted on the side or top of the ZF transmission housing).
Repair the Harness (If Applicable)
If your diagnostic tests revealed a short in the wiring harness, splice and solder a new section of wire, sealing it with heat-shrink tubing. Reroute the harness slightly or add protective loom to prevent future chafing.
Replace the Solenoid (If Applicable)
Clean the area around the K4 proportional valve to prevent dirt from entering the transmission. Remove the retaining bolt/bracket holding the K4 solenoid in place. Pull the faulty solenoid out of the valve block (have a rag ready for minor hydraulic fluid loss). Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean transmission fluid and press it into the valve block. Torque the retaining bolt to factory specifications and reconnect the electrical plug.
Reassemble and Calibrate
Reconnect the battery. Turn the key on and clear the stored fault codes via the AFS Pro display or diagnostic tool. Start the tractor and perform a transmission calibration procedure (often required when a clutch solenoid is replaced so the ZTC can learn the new valve's fill times).
