Case IH 2652 – ZTC: ZTC - Range clutch BG is shorted to ground.

Issue description

The controller has detected a low-voltage or zero-resistance condition on the electrical circuit responsible for operating the "BG" range clutch solenoid. A "short to ground" typically points to either a wiring harness that has rubbed bare and is touching the tractor's metal chassis, or an internal failure (shorted coil) within the solenoid itself.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the transmission wiring harness routing from the ZTC to the transmission control valve block for pinched wires, melted insulation, or chafing against the transmission housing.

  2. Inspect the connector pins at the solenoid for water ingress, corrosion, or bent pins that could be bridging the circuit to ground.

  3. Disconnect the electrical connector at the Range Clutch BG solenoid to isolate the circuit.

  4. Test the solenoid (internal short cause): Using a multimeter, measure the resistance across the pins of the solenoid. If there is continuity to the solenoid's metal housing or the resistance is at/near 0 ohms, the solenoid coil is internally shorted.

  5. Test the harness (wiring short cause): With the solenoid disconnected, check for continuity between the harness connector's signal wire and a known good chassis ground. If continuity exists, the wiring harness is shorted to ground.

Repair steps

  1. Locate the Valve Block

    Locate the powershift directional control valve block on the side of the CVT transmission housing.

  2. Identify the BG Solenoid

    Identify the specific solenoid for the BG Range Clutch (refer to the specific model's hydraulic schematic, as valve block layouts vary slightly between Magnum, Puma, and Steiger models).

  3. Remove the Solenoid

    Disconnect the wiring harness. Remove the retaining bolt or snap-ring holding the solenoid cartridge in the valve block.

  4. Extract the Cartridge

    Carefully pull the solenoid cartridge out of the valve body. Have a drain pan ready to catch residual transmission fluid.

  5. Install the New Solenoid

    Lubricate the O-rings on the new solenoid with clean Case IH Hy-Tran Ultraction fluid. Slide the new solenoid into the bore and secure it with the retaining hardware.

  6. Reassemble and Calibrate

    Reconnect the electrical connector and the battery. Clear the fault codes using the EST (Electronic Service Tool) or in-cab display.

  7. Calibration

    You must perform a transmission clutch calibration procedure (often requiring the transmission fluid to be at operating temperature) so the ZTC can learn the fill times and engagement characteristics of the new solenoid.
