Case IH 2653 – TCU: Hydrostatic unit positive solenoid shorted to ground

Issue description

The positive voltage supply wire running from the Transmission Control Unit (TCU) to the hydrostatic proportional solenoid is making direct electrical contact with the machine's chassis (ground), creating an immediate overcurrent situation and causing a loss of hydraulic pressure control.

Check the cause

  1. Visually inspect the wiring harness running from the TCU to the hydrostatic unit for pinched wires, melted insulation, or areas rubbing against the chassis or transmission housing.

  2. Disconnect and isolate the electrical connector at the hydrostatic positive solenoid.

  3. Using a digital multimeter, measure continuity between the positive wire on the harness side and the chassis ground. Continuity indicates the short is in the wiring harness.

  4. Measure the resistance across the solenoid coil pins, and from the positive pin of the solenoid to the solenoid casing. Continuity to the casing indicates the coil is internally shorted.

  5. Check the hydrostatic/transmission fluid level and condition. Burnt or heavily contaminated fluid can cause excessive heat, melting solenoid coil insulation.

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

    Turn off the machine, remove the key, and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent accidental spikes to the TCU.

  2. Clean the Area

    Thoroughly clean the area around the hydrostatic unit to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system when the solenoid is removed.

  3. Address the Short

    If the harness is shorted: Trace the wire back to the TCU. Cut out the chafed/melted section of the wire and solder in a new section using heat-shrink tubing to seal it from moisture. If the solenoid is internally shorted: Remove the retaining nut on the end of the solenoid valve. Slide the faulty coil off the valve stem. (If the valve cartridge itself is sticking or damaged, unthread the entire cartridge valve from the hydrostatic block).

  4. Install New Components

    Slide the new solenoid coil onto the valve stem and tighten the retaining nut. Reconnect the electrical harness.

  5. Restore Power and Clear Codes

    Reconnect the battery. Use the Case IH AFS Pro monitor or a diagnostic service tool to clear the inactive fault codes from the TCU.

  6. Recalibration

    Whenever a hydrostatic solenoid is replaced, you must perform a transmission/hydrostatic deadband calibration via the cab display to ensure smooth engagement and correct neutral positioning.
