2654

Case IH 2654 – ZTC: Hydrostatic unit (HSU) solenoid shorted to ground fault

Issue description

The electrical circuit controlling the hydrostatic unit (HSU) solenoid has a short to ground. The voltage intended to actuate the solenoid is taking a path of least resistance directly to the chassis ground, bypassing the solenoid coil. This prevents the hydrostatic unit from receiving the proper command signals, leading to a loss of transmission control, erratic shifting, or the tractor defaulting to neutral.

Applies to these machines

  • Steiger T4B
  • Magnum 2654
  • Magnum 235
  • Magnum 250
  • Magnum 280
  • Magnum 310
  • Magnum 340
  • Magnum 380
  • Steiger series
  • Quadtrac series

Check the cause

  1. Inspect the wiring harness leading to the hydrostatic unit on the transmission for chafed wires, melted insulation, or pinch points touching the chassis

  2. Disconnect the harness at the HSU solenoid and check for water ingress, bent pins, or corrosion

  3. With battery and ZTC module disconnected, use a multimeter to measure continuity between the negative solenoid wire and chassis ground (continuity indicates a shorted harness)

  4. Measure resistance across the solenoid coil pins (near zero ohms indicates an internally shorted solenoid)

Repair steps

  1. Power Down

Turn off the ignition and disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent electrical spikes.

  2. Access the Hydrostatic Unit

Locate the hydrostatic unit and its control valve manifold on the transmission housing. Clean the area around the solenoid to prevent dirt from entering the hydraulic system.

  3. Harness Repair

If the diagnostic tests revealed a chafed wire, splice and solder the damaged section, then seal it with dual-wall heat shrink tubing. Secure the harness with zip ties away from vibration points.

  4. Solenoid Replacement

Disconnect the electrical connector from the shorted solenoid. Remove the retaining nut or bolts holding the solenoid coil to the valve stem. Slide the old solenoid coil off. (If the entire cartridge valve needs replacing, unthread it from the manifold and catch any residual hydraulic fluid). Install the new solenoid/valve, torque to OEM specifications, and reattach the electrical connector.

  5. Reassembly and Calibration

Reconnect the battery. Clear the fault codes from the ZTC controller using the Case IH Electronic Service Tool (EST).

  6. Recalibration

Whenever a hydrostatic unit component or solenoid is replaced, perform a transmission/hydrostatic calibration (neutral deadband and sensitivity) via the tractor's display or EST software to ensure proper engagement.
